While I was selling real estate in California an executive of a
major electronic firm told me his method of looking for a new home
since he had lived in many places during his career. He
said that he would first drive around and scout out neighborhoods
that were visually appealing to him. He would talk to
five of six residents on each street and ask about the neighborhood,
schools, etc. He said that he knew that real estate agents
could not give their opinions because of the anti-discrimination
laws so he relied on the people in each neighborhood. Then he
and his wife, called a realtor to find the best match of homes for
sales in those neighborhoods. He said that even if they didn't
have children the best values seemed to be in the best school
areas. It seemed to work well for him.
